Draught Proof Sash Windows Restoration & Renovation.

Sash Window Restoration and Renovation is the most effective way to preserve the original look and feel of your period sash windows — without compromising on durability or usability. Many homeowners are surprised by the extent of damage we can repair, restoring even heavily worn windows back to their original condition.

This approach is also the most cost-effective option. Combined with our bespoke draught proofing for sash windows, every restoration project delivers fully functional, energy-efficient windows. Refurbished draught proof sash windows not only improve heat retention but also significantly reduce noise, enhancing comfort in your home.

Any necessary replacement splicing is carefully carried out using timber that matches the existing window profile, ensuring the restored window looks exactly as it did originally. Where required, hardwood sill replacements are crafted to complement the existing style perfectly.

Areas affected by rot are removed and repaired using a high-quality two-part epoxy wood filler, which is then sanded to a smooth finish to replicate the original contours.

A standard sash window refurbishment typically includes:

Sash Window Removal from the Main Frame.

Visual inspection of the Sashes and Boxes to identify necessary repairs, as outlined in the quotation.

All Timber Repairs are completed to include splicing, filling, re-glazing, and sill repair or replacement. All running surfaces of the Boxes and Sashes are sanded to ensure smooth operation of the window. They then receive a coat of primer for weatherproofing protection and aesthetics.

The Sashes are re-corded, weighed, and balanced to ensure that the existing weights are sufficient. We then machine the Sashes to accept our bespoke Draught Proofing system.

On completion of all repairs, the Sashes are re-installed into the Boxes and new staff bead, parting bead, and hardware is fitted in accordance with the client’s requirements. The window is then tested for performance and the client is shown how to operate and maintain the newly refurbished window.

Sash Window Draught Proofing.

Did you know your home could be losing up to 20% of its heat through inefficient windows? A significant amount of this heat loss often occurs around sash frames. If you run your hand around a window and feel cold air coming in, it means the warm air you’re paying to heat is escaping through those same gaps — costing you money and reducing comfort.

Some homeowners attempt DIY draught proofing for sash windows with newspaper, brush strips, or self-adhesive foam. However, these solutions are rarely effective, can look unsightly, and don’t provide a long-term fix.

Our professional draught proof sash windows service is carried out by skilled experts trained in sash and casement window conservation. The process begins with a thorough assessment, followed by carefully removing the sashes from their frames and checking their structural integrity. Any necessary repairs to the sashes or box frame are completed before draught-proofing components are added.

We create precision channels along each sash to install specialist draught proofing strips and fit a new staff bead designed to block unwanted airflow. Bare wood is treated, and the top sash is realigned before the parting bead is fitted. The bottom sash is then reinstalled and checked for smooth, effortless operation.

Every window is tested to ensure the counterweights and pulley system work perfectly, improving performance and usability. Once complete, your draught proof sash windows will deliver significantly better energy efficiency, preventing cold draughts and keeping valuable heat inside your home.

An added benefit of our comprehensive draught proofing for sash windows is the elimination of rattles, bumps, and external noise — leaving your home warmer, quieter, and more comfortable all year round.

Double Glazed Sash Windows.

When requested, we can offer to install new Double Glazed Sashes into the original frames, maintaining the character of the window. We match the existing Single Glazed Sashes by using the same rail sections and widths and copying the existing horn details.

Externally, we have an angled timber bead fitted to replicate the original putty pointing. Internally, we machine an ovolo mould to match the existing as close as possible.

If the replica Sashes require glazing bars, they can be manufactured down to a thickness of 20mm as per the original Sashes. We fit a 4-12-4 Pilkington K Glass Double Glazed Unit as standard, which has a typical U Value of 2.0.

The additional weight of the Sashes means that the original cast weights are unusable. Those are replaced with new lead weights to maintain the full height travel of the Sashes.

Our Sashes are manufactured from the unassorted Swedish Redwood, which leaves the factory glazed and primed. We can also manufacture from a selection of hardwoods where requested.
