Listed Buildings are those which are considered to be of special architectural or historic interest, and are included on a national list published by English Heritage. A building must be more than 30 years old and meet certain criteria to be eligible for inclusion on this statutory list.
Often, buildings built before or between 1700 and 1850, which are well maintained and close to their original condition, will be listed. To find out whether a building is listed, you can access a list of all the listed buildings within England on the National Heritage List for England (NHLE).
A listed building does not freeze the building in time or prevent any changes to the property. However, it does mean special consent must be granted if any changes are to be made which could affect its heritage.
The Council has a statutory duty to regulate demolitions or alterations to listed buildings. It also gives special consideration to the impact of any proposed development in the vicinity of a listed building and considers any issues in the preparation of local planning policy.
