Top 4 Ways to Improve Your Home Security

Home security is a number one priority for everyone, so it’s important to know how to secure your home. Before you rush out and purchase expensive security systems, make sure to take a good, detailed look around your home!

If you don’t want to become a victim of theft make sure to take advantage of our following tips…

1. Keep your doors and windows securely locked

This seems quite straight forward but many people don’t realise how easy it is to break old or damaged locks. If you’re locks are looking rusty and a bit worse for wear, it may be time to look into replacing your window and doors hardware to increase home security.
If you’re not willing to replace the hardware, there are always inexpensive window alarms but these can be temperamental and easy to break!
We recommend doing this before the height of Summer as this is when theft is at the highest due to homes often being unoccupied.

2. Get extra locks for all sliding windows

For better home security adding some extra locking ironware is a great place to start to prevent illegal access to your house.
Small metal hinges or weak plastic latches can be easily crushed or broken, giving the intruder easy access to your goods.
Sliding window locks are designed to clip onto the window and block the tracks where the window opens, it’s important to check regularly they are still working.

3. Make use of your surrounding greenery

Trees and shrubbery can be a great way to deter thieves as it blocks your homes view from the street and makes clambering through a window that little bit harder.
Not only do they protect your home but add a beautiful aspect that will have you admiring your home.

4. Place motion sensor lights outside windows

Motion sensor lights keep your home well-lit and alert you or neighbours to any possible trespassing on the property.
If you’re worried about plugging them in, most modern sensors are wireless and only turn on when motion is detected.
Most thieves will leave the area if motion sensor lights turn on as they are more visible and would rather escape to a darker area as to not be detected.

Tips from real burglars which you should not ignore:

  • Criminals explore a neighbourhood before they take action, they’ll have an idea what time you leave your house.
  • Avoid placing stuff in plain sight, that’s how you attract attention. If you are keeping nice stuff in your house in plain sight keep your blinds closed. If you own a luxury or classic car keep it in a garage, out of sight.
  • It is good to have a motion floodlight for when a motion light kicks on, it says: “Hello I see you”.
  • Don’t put stickers with your security brand on your doors or windows, that can provide enough information on how to disable it.

Please note, nobody can guarantee home security 100% but there if you follow our tips you can definitely reduce the risk!
